Opportunities to Serve

Are you an architect, engineer, or surveyor? Do you have a desire to help the poor in Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean? We have different opportunities for you to serve!

If you are interested in any of the following positions at eMig please e-mail us at info@emiguate.org

Professional Volunteer (1-2 week trip)

If you are an architect, civil, electrical, structural, water or wastewater engineer, surveyor, or other technical professional, we can use you on a project trip.

Serving on a project trip is a great opportunity to use your technical skills to make a real difference by helping a ministry help people in the developing world both physically and spiritually.  It is also a great experience for the volunteer, a chance to get to know a new country and to work alongside men and women who have an intense desire to help build and bless their communities.  The missionaries and local ministries that we serve have sometimes spent many days, weeks, or even months in prayer asking God for help, and the team from eMi may be the first step in God's answer to their prayers. The final report and construction drawings that we provide is a concrete symbol of God's provision in their lives, a reminder that He loves and cares for them.

The trips are generally from one to two weeks long.  After the trip, our volunteers may be expected to spend as many as 100 hours working on the project at home.  The cost of a trip is usually between $1200-1500, although it depends somewhat on the trip length, airfare, and other factors.  All trip expenses that you pay are tax deductible.  Many volunteers raise the trip costs through their churches, companies and personal contacts.

If you are interested in joining a project team, the eMiUSA website has a list of the current needs for upcoming projects at eMig as well as at the other eMi offices.

Internship (3-9 months)

The eMig internship program is geared toward students and recent college graduates interested in working in the design profession while serving Christian missions.

Involvement in International Ministry (Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean)

Interns with eMig are needed to serve in the fields of architecture, civil, environmental, and structural engineering, computer science, graphic design, construction management, and surveying.  As an intern, you can gain practical work experience in your field while serving Christian ministries in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.  This is a chance to utilize and develop your design skills, while your perspective of the world is challenged and expanded.  Each intern may work on several aspects of their projects, from site plans to structures, architecture to wastewater, surveying to drafting.  Interns are an important part of the eMig work force, and may see a project progress all the way from its beginnings to the final report and set of construction plans—everything we offer to help the missionary to realize their vision!

Using our skills to help others

Usually, an intern will serve on an eMig project team, participating in a one to two week mission trip somewhere in the area we serve.  Interns then return to the eMig office in Guatemala City to complete and publish the engineering reports and construction plans.  They are also assigned work on various other projects. Individual interns are supervised by a specific staff member, who accepts the responsibility to mentor the individual and oversee their progress. The length of an internship can vary from three to nine months.  The year is divided into three semesters—spring, summer and fall—but longer internships combining two semesters are encouraged.

Experience the adventure

The eMig Internship program is designed for maturing men and women who desire to utilize their design background and be further involved in Christian missions.  It enables them to gain practical work experience in their technical field and in Christian ministry.  You will also learn a great deal about the fascinating culture of Guatemala, and see the country from many angles.  All interns have the option to stay with a Guatemalan family the whole time they are serving with eMig.

Benefits of internship

·          Interns gain practical experience and confidence in their design field and in Christian ministry.

·          Interns develop architectural and engineering skills on a variety of projects.

·          Interns will experience a new culture and live in a beautiful and fascinating country.

·          Interns have the opportunity to provide a lasting service to those in great need.

·          Interns receive valuable instruction, both professionally and spiritually.

Qualifications for interns

Staff (1+ years)

eMig is always expanding.  God is continually bringing us into contact with those with needs, and as we strive to help more people, we need more people working with us.  We are always looking for men and women who have a heart to serve God at eMig.  If you have been on a trip with eMi before, you may have an idea of what we do and what it would be like to be a part of our staff.  If you sense that God may be calling you to full-time service at eMig, consider joining our staff.  Our greatest needs right now are qualified candidates in the following areas:

·          STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

·          ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER

·          SURVEYOR

·          DRAFTSMAN

·          CIVIL ENGINEER

·          ARCHITECT

·          COMPUTER NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

Note: These positions require that you first serve with Engineering Ministries International as a volunteer on a design team.  This allows you to understand eMi more completely and to get a feel for what it would be like to be on staff.  It also gives us a chance to get to know you!

Support

We are a ministry that relies upon the gifts of engineers and lay persons for support.  All gifts are tax deductible.  eMig is committed to use the largest portion of these gifts for direct project costs (currently, less than 10% of the donations we receive goes towards administration and overhead).  Staff members are supported by the contributions of individuals and churches who desire to benefit the work of overseas missions and help meet the needs of the poor.

“How often the passion and heart of Christ is revealed to me through these words of his: ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:34-36,40.

“It is the love of Christ which I have been shown that binds me to those who are suffering under poverty. I have lived with families here in Central America who only know the oppression and struggle of real poverty, and I can begin to understand Christ’s feelings of being “moved with compassion.” Fortunately, the story does not end with just being moved. It continues by being moved with compassion to do something and make a lasting difference. As long as my heart aches for those that He loves, my hands will never rest.”
